Background

Hummingbird by Hanoi Cider is a cocktail-forward concept that also serves delicious small plates and comfort food. Operating out of a beautiful villa in the French Quarter, it is one of the most exciting new entries in the F&B scene, in Hanoi’s most exclusive neighborhood.

Owner Guy Dickson breathed life into Hummingbird in the summer of 2022. Like most of his projects, he moved quickly and decisively, and wanted to be open in time for the July crowds. He engaged Fourdozen to help further his vision by designing Hummingbird’s logo, selecting colorways and fonts, and preparing its first menus.

Our Big Idea

Taking inspiration from the hummingbird itself, as well as jungle foliage and tiki motifs, we prepared a series of straightforward approaches to the logo, making the literal visual, with a small hummingbird, delicately suspended in the air, looking for a flower.

For font, we settled on Mackinac, a bold serif from P22 Type Foundry that is versatile enough for everything from menus and outdoor advertising, and still distinct enough to give the brand its own identity, separate from the flood of other new bars and restaurants in Hanoi. The final color palette used wet browns and emerald greens to evoke untouched rainforests full of jungle birds.

Hummingbirds never stay still, and we never do, either. A clear brief here led to a beautiful practical execution that not only distinguishes Hummingbird from its parent restaurant Hanoi Cider House, but also helps it stand out as a flagship in a new part of the city.
